Cognitive residues of similarity

چکیده

What are the “cognitive after-effects” of making a similarity judgement? What, cognitively, is left behind and what effect might these residues have on subsequent processing? In this paper, we probe for such after-effects using a visual search task, performed after a task in which pictures of real-world objects were compared. So, target objects were first presented in a comparison task (e.g., rate the similarity of this object to another) thus, presumably, modifying some of their features before asking people to visually search for the same object in complex scenes (with distractors and camouflaged backgrounds). As visual search is known to be influenced by the features of target objects, then any aftereffects of the comparison task should be revealed in subsequent visual searches. Results showed that when people previously rated an object as being high on a scale (e.g., colour similarity or general similarity) then visual search is inhibited (slower RTs and more saccades in eyetracking) relative to an object being rated as low in the same scale. There was also some evidence that different comparison tasks (e.g., compare on colour or compare on general similarity) have differential effects on visual search.

Phylogenetic and sequence analysis of the growth hormone gene of two sturgeons, Huso huso and Acipenser Gueldenstaedtii

In this study, the cDNA Growth Hormone (cGH) of the Belugasturgeon (Husohuso) and Russian sturgeon (Acipensergueldenstaedtii) were cloned and sequenced, and phylogenetic relationships were examined using nucleic acid and amino acid sequences. The nucleotide sequence of the Beluga GH has an open reading frame of 645 nucleotides encoding a protein 214 amino acid residues. The signal peptide cleav...

Similarity measurement for describe user images in social media

Online social networks like Instagram are places for communication. Also, these media produce rich metadata which are useful for further analysis in many fields including health and cognitive science. Many researchers are using these metadata like hashtags, images, etc. to detect patterns of user activities. However, there are several serious ambiguities like how much reliable are these informa...

Molecular Cloning and Characterization of a Lipase from an Indigenous Bacillus pumilus

Cloning and sequencing of a lipase gene from an indigenous Bacillus pumilus, strain F3, revealed an open-reading frame of 648 nucleotides predicted to encode a protein of 215 residues. Sequence analysis showed that F3 lipase contained a signal peptide composed of 34 amino acids with an H domain of 18 residues. A tat-like motif was found in the signal peptide similar to some other Bacillus pumil...

Impact of Cooking Procedures on Antibacterial Drug Residues in Foods: A Review

Antibacterial drugs used in animal might result in deposition of residues in meat, milk and eggs. The presence of antimicrobial residues in animal-originated food is critical problem in many countries over the years. Because, drug residues might result in various health hazards, both actual incidence of reactions and potential hazards perceived by the public, the most countries assess residue o...
